Clinical Supervision
For BIPOC Therapists In Canada
You’re a new or relatively new psychotherapist eager to learn, be inspired, and get support so you can do your best work yet. You have the best intentions coming into this career, yet despite that, there’s still a nagging feeling that you aren’t doing enough or you’d somehow get in trouble for your mistakes. You do your research, ask around, and review your notes, but you’re still unsure and afraid. Not only are you navigating how to best support your clients, but also your own burnout and imposter syndrome.
You know how valuable this experience can be when it occurs within a community of supportive therapists where your truth and lived experiences are honoured. It is essential to have a space where nuanced conversations about intersectional identities and systemic issues are welcome, especially for those of marginalized identities, where these dialogues are necessary.
This is for you if…..
You are a psychotherapist, social worker, or mental health clinician who genuinely cares about the people you work with.
It matters to you that your truth and lived experiences are honored.
You are ready to learn from your mistakes and happy to support others in their learning(including myself).
You are committed to decolonizing therapy. You’re curious and ready to engage in the ongoing work it entails.
You are excited not only for your professional and personal growth but also for the growth of your community.
This is NOT for you if….
You are a therapist looking to simply count the required supervision hours and get over the need for it ASAP.
You want to do your job well but want to be told exactly what to do.
You don’t see your work as political, you'd rather be neutral or a “blank slate therapist”.
You don’t believe that there is ongoing inner work to be done as a clinician in the mental health field.
You don’t see how your work extends beyond the therapy room or the therapy hour.
Hi, I’m Elda, a Registered Psychotherapist who provides clinical supervision to racialized psychotherapists.
My Approach
I agree with holding psychotherapists to high standards of practice, and I also believe this pressure can be overwhelming. I understand that it may make therapists want specific answers, to get someone to tell them exactly what needs to be done. However, our and our client’s experiences are often nuanced. It requires conceptualization and treatment planning anchored on their specific life circumstances, your therapeutic approach and relationship, and both your identities.
I believe in the value of guiding you through that. That’s why my supervisory style is both supportive and constructive. You deserve to feel encouraged and be held accountable, fostering your growth as a therapist. I encourage reflective practice as a core component in supervision.
It is my goal to help nurture therapists’ skills to practice competently and ethically by engaging in critical thinking, groundedness, and self-regulation. I invite you to work on decolonizing and destigmatizing mental health care.
I honor and welcome my supervisees’ intersectional identities, learning styles, and lived experiences and encourage them to hold their truth as they reflect on their experience in the therapist-client dyad and think critically of systemic issues that they and their clients may be a part of.
I hope to mentor and support therapists so they may have meaningful and sustainable careers in mental health.
