The therapist goes over the agreement forms to make sure that we’re on the same page and in agreement with the work we will be doing. We also usually gather information about you and your needs. It might take a few sessions for your therapist to fully understand your situation and concerns and determine the best course of action.
The first session is also an opportunity for you to get to know your therapist. You’ll be able to see whether the therapist’s approach and personality are going to work for you.
Ask questions anytime during your appointment. If you don’t feel comfortable, let your therapist know so we can explore what we can do.
-
The length of treatment varies for each individual, depending on your goals and history. In the first couple of sessions, we will discuss the treatment plan.
-
That is okay. And just like any relationship, sometimes it happens.
If we or the type of therapy doesn’t feel like a fit, we always welcome a conversation. This is your care and we will support you in transitioning to another therapist if needed.
Our Expertise
-
Yes, Larô Therapy is Ontario's all-Filipino team of Registered Psychotherapists. Our founder Elda Almario and therapists Kim Salvador and Yra Calamiong-Otchengco are all first-generation Filipino immigrants who understand utang na loob, hiya, pakikisama, and the unique pressures of Filipino diaspora life. We provide culturally-responsive care rooted in malasakit (genuine concern.)
-
Yes. All our therapists are fluent in English, Tagalog, and Filipino. You can choose to have your sessions entirely in Tagalog, entirely in English, or switch between languages as feels natural. Many Filipino clients find that certain emotions or cultural concepts are easier to express in Tagalog, and we welcome whatever language helps you feel most understood.
-
We're Ontario's only all-Filipino therapy team with specialized expertise in healthcare worker burnout and newcomer adjustment—and we're currently accepting new clients. Both Kim Salvador, RP, and Yra Calamiong-Otchengco, RP (Qualifying), are welcoming new clients now. We understand Filipino cultural values like utang na loob, hiya, and pakikisama, and provide therapy in English, Tagalog, or Filipino across all of Ontario virtually.
-
As first-generation Filipino immigrants ourselves, we deeply understand these cultural values and how they impact mental health. We know how utang na loob (debt of gratitude) can create pressure to sacrifice your own needs, how hiya (shame) can prevent you from seeking help, and how pakikisama (getting along with others) can make it hard to set boundaries. Our therapy helps you honour your culture while also honouring yourself.

Yes. Kim Salvador, RP, specializes in supporting healthcare workers—particularly Filipino nurses, PSWs, and caregivers—who are experiencing burnout, compassion fatigue, or work-related stress. With 8+ years of experience and specialized training in trauma therapy (EMDR), Kim understands the unique pressures healthcare workers face: long shifts, emotional demands, witnessing suffering, and the cultural expectation to always be strong. She provides a space where healthcare workers can prioritize their own mental health without judgment.
-
Yes! Yra Calamiong-Otchengco, RP (Qualifying), specializes in supporting Filipino newcomers and recent immigrants. With 6 years of experience practicing psychotherapy, Yra brings both professional expertise and lived experience as a recent immigrant herself. She deeply understands the challenges of adjusting to a new country: navigating unfamiliar systems, feeling isolated, missing home, pressure to succeed, and uncertainty about your identity and belonging. She provides culturally-attuned support for newcomers processing grief for what they left behind while building a new life in Canada.
-
Yes. Both Kim Salvador, RP, and Yra Calamiong-Otchengco, RP (Qualifying), are trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), an evidence-based therapy specifically designed to help people process traumatic memories and distressing experiences. EMDR is particularly effective for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and painful memories that feel stuck. Kim combines EMDR with mindfulness-based approaches and specializes in healthcare worker trauma and chronic pain. Yra combines EMDR with trauma-informed and polyvagal-informed approaches, particularly for newcomers dealing with immigration trauma and grief. Sessions are conducted in English, Tagalog, or Filipino, whichever feels most comfortable.
